The “2026 CPO Insights Report” was sponsored by our partners at Mighty Capital.

Introducing the 2026 CPO Insights Report: From Builder to Investor: The New Product Mandate, the fifth installment in our flagship research series from Products That Count, the premier resource for Chief Product Officer insights and a global community of more than 600,000 product managers and leaders. Drawing on insights from over 1,500 CPOs across twelve industries and three continents, and, for the first time, expanded to include private companies with $1B–$10B in revenue, this report offers a roadmap for the new product mandate and outlines the five shifts redefining product leadership in the age of AI velocity.

Topline Takeaways

  1. Speed is the top concern of CPOs: The primary constraint on shipping used to be the long cycle times of engineering, design, and prototyping. AI has condensed those timeframes from months down to days. Last year, we identified a 10X improvement in development. This year, velocity keeps accelerating, and speed has become the defining competitive variable in product.
  2. From Product Manager to Product Builder: AI is rewriting the product role itself. By 2030, Products That Count predicts the traditional product manager will be entirely replaced by a new role: the Product Builder, who discovers, prototypes, builds, and deploys with AI velocity to deliver 2x better value at 10x speed. Product Builders are growing at a 10x pace, while traditional PMs have declined 30% overall and as much as 70% in SaaS.
  3. The bottleneck has moved downstream: With product development faster than ever, the new constraint is go-to-market, adoption, and organizational alignment. CPOs must now ask, “How fast can we turn what we build into value?” The task is no longer just shipping faster, it’s making the entire organization move at the speed of product development.
  4. The best CPOs are going on offense: AI has made product moats more vulnerable than ever, so every CPO must defend their position. But the best leaders aren’t playing defense. They’re using an offensive mindset to cut go-to-market time by 50%, seizing opportunities in an environment full of openings for those ready to move.
  5. The emergence of the Chief Product Investor: The best CPOs are becoming portfolio allocators, reallocating resources and driving enterprise-level outcomes. The rise of the Chief Product Investor creates CPO Alpha 2.0: the competitive advantage gained when a company ships and iterates faster than its industry rivals. Today, 1 in 3 CPOs now own and drive the M&A agenda for their companies.

The message is clear: in 2026, the CPO is going on offense. The role is moving away from execution. Less time managing stakeholders and roadmaps, more time on strategy, innovation, and portfolio thinking. The pace of change is accelerating, and based on this year’s findings, Products That Count predicts that by 2030, the traditional product manager will be entirely replaced by the Product Builder, and the CPOs who fail to make the leap from Builder to Investor will be left behind.
